North London Tree Surgeons
We love trees!
Therefore, as arborists there are certain services we do not offer.
We do not
- work on insurance related tree removals;
- work in the nesting season or at a time injurious to wildlife;
- remove trees or limbs merely to improve the view, remove a source of leaves or reduce the shade where this work is damaging to the tree;
- carry out any work that inflicts foreseeable long term damage to the tree.
We do however offer to
- work with your tree to manage its appearance in a sustainable way;
- we propose to undertake multiple small interventions (pruning) to keep the tree looking good whilst also reducing any large costs occurring due to the tree becoming so large specialist rigging becomes required to take down large limbs (think of a hairdresser adding style vs a crewcut on joining the army)
- we will take away, build dead hedges or chipper branches in accordance with customer choices.
- above all, we will love your tree.

N10 TREES
N10 trees understands the ecological significance that trees hold within the urban environment. Our services encompass a range of activities including tree pruning, crown management, monolithing and more thereby addressing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of tree maintenance. The importance of proper tree care cannot be overstated. Urban trees contribute massively to environmental sustainability by maintaining biodiversity, improving air quality, noise reduction and providing shade that mitigates the heat island effect. However, without regular maintenance these benefits can be compromised due to factors such as disease or structural instability. N10 Trees recognizes this imperative; thus, we implement a tailored strategy for each tree that prioritizes both the immediate needs of the tree, the broader ecological context in which the tree exists and in fact costs the customer less money over the longer term.

Tree Services
Some of the services we provide
Tree Pruning North London
Regular pruning (removal of small branches) of your tree will keep it looking good and remaining the right size for the location. Pruning is also the most cost effective intervention (pruning little and often is cheaper than infrequently removing large limbs with the increased disruption and requirement for rigging). However, skill is required to prune correctly to limit damage to the tree.
Crown Management North London
Crown reduction is the process used to reduce what may be seen as the overbearing presence of a dominant taller tree. Crown reduction also removes weight from the ends of branches making them sturdier and less likely to sag or break. Crown thinning. Trees with dense foliage are more susceptible to wind forces. Hence, selective removal of internal branches will improve air flow through the crown making the tree less susceptible to wind damage. Crown lifting describes the removal of branches in the lower portion of the crown to provide better light and access around the tree at ground level
Tree Pollarding North London
Pollarding describes heavy pruning to keep a tree smaller than it would naturally grow. It starts once a tree reaches a certain height with regular pollarding restricting the tree to a predetermined height. Pollarding a tree can reduce the shade cast by a tree and in turn allow more light. Pollarded trees also live longer as they remain in a juvenile state and are less susceptible to wind damage.
Tree Removal North London
Where a tree is diseased or too large for its location, tree removal is often the only option. Removing a tree in a confined space requires skill, logistics and precision; and must be undertaken by a trained expert. Trees being removed where there is enough space surrounding the tree (to fall) may be felled from ground level whereas to remove trees In gardens where space is confined requires top down dismantling using rigging to ensure no damage to surrounding objects. The positive side of removing a tree is the opportunity to plant a vigorous young tree which we can also do. We can also advise on offsetting the loss of a tree by planting elsewhere.
Stump Removal North London
Stump removal involves taking out the tree stump and roots to 300mm below ground level using a mechanical grinder or other (non toxic) method. The hole is then backfilled with either the stump grindings or topsoil depending on the location of the tree.
Hedging North London
Although almost everyone can cut a hedge, gardeners are restricted to working at specific heights. Using stabilizing devices, tree surgeons can trim and shape any size of hedge. This includes what the customer can see and what he cannot see over the next garden!
Log management North London
If desired we can cut and split any removed wood to size to fit an approved woodburner. Generally felled timber will be at 40% moisture content which needs to be reduced to a maximum of 20% prior to burning. This seasoning may be achieved on site via a suitable wood store that allows drying air flows. We can install a bespoke woodstore to fit the customer's location with a living roof if desired. N10 Trees also has access to seasoned logs (Less than 20% moisture) which we can arrange delivery of directly into the customer's woodstore.
Treehouse Building North London
As a niche speciality we also offer where practical a tree house building service. For this service we employ the German Treehouse Screw system as supplied by The Treehouse Shop. Type of supporting structure is bespoke for each site and depends upon the trees available and the purpose for which the treehouse is desired. More information gladly supplied upon request.
Monolithing North London
Where a significant loved tree has died, it may be appropriate to keep the truncated trunk with shortened stubby limbs as a feature. Such a feature whilst visually striking, is also excellent for wildlife as dead wood provides sustenance and a home for many creatures. Treating a dead tree in this way is known as monolithing the tree.
Dead Hedging North London
As pruning, crown management etc result in large quantities of removed tree material (not 'waste') there is ample opportunity to create additional wildlife habitats and visual screening through a 'dead hedge' or a 'living wall'. At its simplest, a dead hedge can be two parallel lines of stakes (also made from tree branches) in-filled with branches, twigs and leaves. Such a structure provides a valued ecosystem for many small creatures. Dead hedging also reduces or eliminates removal of material from site (potentially having to go through the house) and thereby significantly reduces the overall cost of tree work.

F.A.Q
Frequently Asked Questions
IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO PRUNE MY TREE?
Although many trees can be pruned at any time of the year, there are better times to carry out work such as to avoid nesting season. The general rule is little and more often, think 'styling' vs 'short back and sides'.
IS IT COST EFFECTIVE TO GET MY TREE PRUNED EVERY YEAR?
Regular pruning, comprising multiple small interventions, in addition to keeping your tree looking good is also the most cost effective way of managing your tree. Frequency of pruning may be annual, bi or tri-annual depending upon the tree species. But it is never more cost effective to do nothing for 10 years then be hit with a big bill. Such an approach is both much more expensive, more disruptive to you and much less good for the tree.
DOES A BIG TREE IN MY GARDEN ADD VALE TO MY HOME?
Yes. It is also good for wildlife, the climate and of interest.
CAN I PRUNE BACK MY NEIGHBOUR'S TREE?
You may prune the overhang back to the boundary with your neighbour being offered the cut branches although he may not want them.
DO I NEED PERMISSION FROM THE COUNCIL TO CUT MY TREE?
Your tree may be subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), or be located in a conservation area. Doing any work on such a tree carries a heavy penalty.
WHERE IS IT BEST TO PLANT A TREE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE REMOVAL OF MY TREE?
It is best to plant a tree with the knowledge that the tree will be cared for throughout its life. There are various charities that offer this service such as The Woodland Trust, Trees for Life, Trees for Cities etc
IS MY TREE SUITABLE FOR A TREEHOUSE?
A treehouse can generally be constructed in and/or around most trees. Either using a single tree or 2, 3 or 4 trees. The more the merrier! Diameter, species and condition of the trees influence the precise treehouse construction which is bespoke to each situation based on the trees and the intended use of the treehouse. With suitable trees, the treehouse can be fully ‘floating’ and able to move with the tree(s) as they sway in the wind without stressing the treehouse construction itself. Treehouse connections to the tree are designed so as not to damage the tree.
I ONLY HAVE ACCESS THROUGH THE HOUSE, HOW WILL YOU AVOID DAMAGING MY PAINTWORK?
We take care to note the condition of paintwork before work commences and ensure no damage is incurred due to our work. Firstly, the floor of the access route and all protruding corners are protected with cardboard secured in place. Secondly, all branches are cut to a size so they can be easily carried through the house without risk of touching any walls. On completion of work cardboard is removed and any leaves swept up.
